History
A town, founded within 1858, was named for Felix Grundy (1777-1840), United States Attorney General (1838-1839) and United States Senator from Tennessee (1839-1840). It was incorporated within 1876. A present courthouse dates from either 1905.

Around October 1864, Union raiders under Brigadier General Stephen Burbridge passed through Grundy in their way to kill a saltworks touching Saltville in Smyth County, where they were met by Confederate troops commanded by Brigadier General Alfred E. Jackson at the Battle of Saltville.

Since 1929, Grundy has suffered nine major floods of the contiguous Levisa Fork River. When a inundation of April 4, 1977, many businesses did does'nt reopen, & a buildings that housed the children were abandoned. The task is afoot to relocate virtually all of the town to higher ground on the other side of the flow of any stream.

Grundy is page to the Appalachian School of Law, organized in 1994 and opened in 1997, when well as a University of Appalachia School of Pharmacy which opened around August of 2005.
